Fabulous 100

This is a pub with rooms, quite swish ones, actually (though it’s amazing how quickly claw-feet bathtubs are dating). You’ll love the Goat (named after the goats that once grazed there instead of cows because the landowner, Lady Portman, was allergic to them), with its blond wood, reclaimed floors and a seriously long bar that is starting to get very busy as Portman Village becomes an entity.

In the upstairs dining room they do a good organic beefburger and, with apologies to Lady Portman, the 28-day aged Castle of Mey rump, served at Sunday lunch, is one terrific piece of beef.
